Sunrise lighting - Grand Teton National Park

There are some things that make it worth getting out of bed early. It's 11 degrees outside (or -12 c, depending...). Good time to sort through old film, though ("he whined") if it has to be this cold here, why can't I be there? Road trip - October, 2004. • Oxbow Bend, Grand Teton National Park - Moonrise with sunset lighting.

The Oxbow Bend area of the Snake River in Grand Teton, along US 89 / 191 (the John D. Rockefeller Parkway). This is the highway from Jackson, WY through Grand Teton and onward into Yellowstone.

If you've never been there, put this trip on your "bucket list".
• September, 2006 - Abandoned mining operation near US-590 between Silverton and Ouray, Colorado.

This is an Ingersoll-Rand "Imperial Type 10" steam-driven air compressor. Actually, it's several tons of 1912-vintage cast iron left behind whenever the mine operator gave up. This thing was huge -- those are full-grown pines in the background; the size 15 hiking boot tracks in the snow are mine.
• Late Summer thunderstorm approaching Avalanche Lake
Glacier National Park - Summer, 2009

Located on the west side of Glacier National Park, the trailhead is about 5.5 miles east of McDonald Lodge. Avalanche Lake Trail is about 2.25 miles one-way with an 730-foot elevation gain from the roadside trailhead to the foot of this spectacular alpine lake. Wear your good hiking boots; you'll thank me later.

This image is an object lesson in the mercurial nature of Rocky Mountain weather. 30 minutes before this photograph was taken, the sky was clear and brilliant blue. The thunderstorm coalesced in minutes; this was one of the last exposures made before began loading gear back into the pack for the return trek. About the time gear was stowed and the pack was harnessed onto my back, I realized that the source of the peculiar roaring noise and the reason the far end of the lake looked like it was starting to boil was that the storm was dropping lots of hail.

Suffice to say that the trip back down the mountain took considerably less time than the climb up. The forest provides a fairly thick canopy of mixed hemlock and cedar, but a 1-inch hailstone still makes an impressive "thud!" when it collides with the top of your head.
Worth. Every. Second.
 • Cupola with Peregrine Falcon - Plummer Building, Mayo Clinic Campus, Rochester MN

Nature finds a way to re-insert itself in all sorts of urban spaces. The falcon habitat at the pinnacle of the Plummer Building is an especially interesting example.
• Cupola & Carillon Enclosure - Plummer Building, Mayo Clinic Campus, Rochester MN

Late afternoon lighting shows off the outstanding architectural highlights of the top level of the Plummer Building. A pair of nurses is placed at each corner, above the large gargoyles. The fifty-six bells of the Rochester Carillon are installed behind the columns beneath the cupola.

That extra bit of ornamentation on the pinnacle of the cupola? It's a peregrine falcon. Closer view available in another image in this gallery.
