Tuning Up for Spring

Fiddlehead Fern

Sprouting in early spring from a tightly coiled crozier, or "fiddlehead", the fully unfurled frond of this native variety will reach 12 - 16 inches within a few days of first appearance from the forest floor. Backlighting from late afternoon sunset highlights the fine hair-like structures that will eventually bear spores for the next generation of the plant.
